Why join the AIA?

Time to raise the big question. Aside from free registration at this year's convention, what do you think are the real benefits of joining the AIA? For myself the benefits were hard to see until I started my own practice. A mentor once told me never to underestimate the respect of my peers. What I've learned in the last 5 years of business is never to underestimate their support. The benefit of being an AIA member is, in my opinion, as immeasurable as architecture itself. And like any organization of its kind, it is only as strong as its members. So, if you're a member, why did you join? If not, lend your opinion and maybe we can start making the AIA stronger.

The AIA really needs to start finding ways for the small architecture companies to get cheap insurance for their employees. You're a huge agency capable of negotiating cheap deals for the rest of us. Get on it!
